When to use this letter
Use this the moment you know the rent will be short — not after the notice arrives. Landlords deal with silence far more harshly than with a tenant who explains the gap and offers a date, and a written plan that you then keep is the strongest evidence you have if the matter ever reaches a court or a mediator.
How to send it
- Offer a specific amount and a specific date. 'As soon as I can' is not a plan and is rarely accepted.
- Apply for local rental assistance the same week and say so in the letter — many landlords will wait when they know a payment is on the way.
- Get any agreement in writing, even a text message saying 'agreed'. A verbal arrangement is not much protection later.
Common mistakes
- Promising more than you can pay to buy calm this week. A broken plan costs you the goodwill the letter created.
- Moving out on the strength of a verbal warning. Only a court can order an eviction, and leaving early can cost you money you would not otherwise owe.
- Ignoring any notice or court paper that arrives. Deadlines on those documents are short and do not pause because a plan was discussed.
