When to use this letter

Use this when your child is struggling at school and you want the district to evaluate them for special education support, or when you want an IEP meeting scheduled. Teachers often suggest waiting another term to see how things go; a dated written request is what turns a concern into a process with deadlines attached, and the timelines generally run from the day the school receives it in writing, not from a conversation in the hallway.

How to send it

  • Address it to the principal and the special education coordinator, and copy the teacher — the front office alone is where these requests stall.
  • Describe what you see at home in plain terms: not reading at his age, does not speak in sentences, cannot sit through homework. You are not expected to name a diagnosis.
  • Ask for the interpreter in the same letter. An IEP meeting run in English is a meeting you attended but did not take part in.

Common mistakes

  • Accepting a verbal 'we'll keep an eye on him.' Monitoring is not an evaluation, and it starts no clock.
  • Not keeping the dated copy. If the evaluation never happens, the date you asked is the single most useful fact you have.
  • Signing forms at the meeting you have not understood. You can take them home, have them translated, and sign afterwards.

If the letter is not enough

Some situations need a full document translated rather than a short letter — a handbook, a benefits notice, a form with tables and signature lines. Our free document translator keeps the original formatting intact, and the guides explain the processes behind most of these letters. If you are unsure which words mean what, the glossary explains them in Burmese.
