When to use this letter

Send this as soon as you move. The address in the school's system decides which bus your child rides, where report cards and medical forms are posted, and which number is called in an emergency — and an out-of-date phone number is the reason schools end up unable to reach a parent about a sick or injured child.

How to send it

Bring proof of the new address — a lease, a utility bill, or a letter addressed to you there. Most schools need one to update the file.
Tell the school office and the bus depot; in many districts they are separate systems and only one of them gets updated.
Ask whether the move changes which school your child is assigned to, and if so whether you can request that they finish the year where they are.

Common mistakes

Telling the teacher only. Teachers do not update the student information system.
Updating the address but not the emergency contacts and phone numbers, which is the part that matters on a bad day.
Assuming the bus route updates itself. It usually takes a few days, so ask when the new stop takes effect.
