How to get a Burmese interpreter

Your options, fastest to most formal

• Telephone interpreting (OPI): services like LanguageLine, Propio, and CyraCom connect a Burmese interpreter in a few minutes, around $1–3 per minute. Most hospitals and school districts already have a contract — front-desk staff often just don't know the access number. Ask your administrator.
• Video remote interpreting (VRI): same idea with video, better for anything involving documents or emotion.
• In-person interpreters: best for IEP meetings, court, and medical procedures. Book 1–2 weeks ahead through a local agency or refugee resettlement office.
• Community organizations: resettlement agencies (Catholic Charities and others) often maintain lists of trained Burmese interpreters.

What the law expects

Organizations receiving federal funds — public schools, hospitals, courts, benefits offices — must provide meaningful language access under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. 'Bring someone who speaks English' is not compliant for anything important. For schools specifically, the U.S. Department of Education has stated that districts must communicate with parents in a language they understand, including for special education, discipline, and enrollment.

Three mistakes to avoid

• Don't use the child as the interpreter — it fails legally for consequential conversations and puts children in impossible positions (imagine a 10-year-old interpreting their own suspension hearing).
• Don't assume 'Burmese' — many families from Myanmar speak Karen, Chin dialects, or Rohingya as their first language. Ask which language before booking.
